EXPEDITION SUMMARY:
For Justin, a world record holding professional adventurer, and Lauren, a corporate high-flyer and self proclaimed perfectionist, challenging themselves physically and mentally was a normal state of being.
...and then they became parents and everything they had known began to unravel.
Justin had paddled a kayak across the Tasman Sea, skied to the South Pole and back but how did his adventure fuelled life balance with feeding schedules, dirty nappies, sleepless nights and the desire to be a good dad?
Lauren felt burned out by the modern day busy and the pressure to lean in, and do it all. She longed to build a life that she didn’t need a vacation from.
Justin and Lauren couldn’t shake the unsettled feeling associated with ‘settling down’. They yearned to see if it was possible to reclaim their sense of discovery, of wildness, of connection, of adventure in a modern, busy world - they wanted to see if it was possible to merge a family life and an adven- turous life.
Most people called it crazy. Some people called it dangerous, irresponsible or just bad parenting. The Jonesys called it life changing. Whatever you call it, it was a journey about self discovery, curi- osity, reinvention and resilience.
Together they would trek 1,800 kilometres unsupported , halfway across Australia, through the Out- back, with their one year old Morgan. Over 102 days they battled extreme temperatures, vast iso- lation, sleep deprivation (thank you teething), suffocating flies, dehydration, crippling blisters, sore ankles, dodged snakes, dingos, emus, kangaroos and wild brumbies.
No support vehicles, on foot, all with a one year old in tow. Nothing like this has ever been done in modern history. On a mission to settle down differently, they discover the joys and challenges of an unpredictable life, lived outside of a box.
It’s during the moments when you truly feel lost that you have the best opportunity to find yourself. Crossing the Outback is about one couples journey that would either tear the family apart or leave them bounded forever.
